I totally enjoyed this book. I found the story and characters reminiscent of the Brit mystery series “Vera” or even of the series “Grantchester”. It’s got a noir-ish feel to it, and it played in black & white in my mind rather than in color. The story takes place in a small French village circa 1963. A 6’7” tall Parisian detective inspector finds himself transferred to this village as part of a country-wide police reorganization. He’s not too happy about it, but strives to make the best of it. In this village where there is almost no crime, his first day on the job starts off with the discovery of a dead girl found in the village cemetery. A horrifying crime, for sure, but it soon develops into something even more sinister with roots in the French Resistance of WW2 and cover-up attempts from within the upper echelons of French government.I liked the decency of the main characters. I liked how the story developed and had the reader imagining driving around the French countryside and Paris. I liked how the village dealt with live bombs and grenades from WW2 sprinkled throughout the woods. I liked the ending. I didn’t like the detective going solo (with no backup) to confront the evildoer; even though it led to an exciting scene, that’s a tiresome cliché.There’s no graphic sex, some of the descriptions of violence were a bit gruesome, and there’s no eff words. There’s a lot of atmospheric scene setting and description. The description of fruit rats in the attic now has me listening for sounds in my own attic. I speed-read through the wordier parts. When I lived in southern France years ago, most of the French who spoke English, spoke Brit English with a Brit accent and Brit idioms. Reading some of those idioms in this book made sense to me. I discovered the Harry Tate novels by the same author and thoroughly enjoyed them. When I looked up Magson's other novels, I came across Lucas Rocco. Having finished the first in the series, I can only conclude that these books are even better than the Tate series. Magson's knowledge of places and events is formidable and his writing is superb. Enjoy!
